We suggest that the tensions generated by the encounter between heavily cultural and social-relational (and psychological) views of social phenomena may find satisfactory resolution for many realists and positivists in the use of three regulative ideals: middle range theory, statistical interactions (Paige, 1999; Swank, 2002), and “multiple conjunctural causation” (Ragin, 1987).

The cultural challenge comes mainly from within sociology and is discussed in four chapters. The rational choice challenge, although coming partly from within sociology, is largely a phenomenon arising from economics and influencing the discipline of political science. Although important to sociology as well, its outlines are captured in a single chapter.
