Now enraged, and forgetting that his goal had been to get to the train station on time, Tebeau challenged Hoagland to go under the stands for some postgame fisticuffs. He signed him for 1896, letting him build experience mostly in the minors and making just eight appearances with the Orioles. Those eight included three complete game victories, enough to justify a fuller chance in 1897. Corbett responded by becoming the ace of the staff, topping twenty victories and working more than three hundred innings. He also beat Boston three times in three tries. To complete the pitching staff, Hanlon promoted a second 1896 acquisition, left-hander Jerry Nops, who was purchased after making one start for the Phillies.
